I loved the video and I love Anne Lister's story. I really enjoyed how Helena Whitbread tells that story. It must have been hard yet so fascinating to work on Anne Lister's diaries and discover her world bit by bit every day. I just wish the music in the video was either quieter or different music entirely as I don't think the mood of the music matches the mood of the video. I dislike the trend of adding music like this. Can we not enjoy the melody of the person's voice telling the story anymore?

I grew up with old photos of shibdon gracing on side of our hallways. My mothers ancestors castles in Ireland on the other. My dad's family is from Queensbury. I can't remember how it goes now, but he's related to the listers by way of a cousin. My mom's family decended from Ireland and came to the US in the early 1900's. Going to shibdon has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember. My whole family was thrilled when they filmed Gentleman Jack. We've been sorely saddened by the fact that they aren't renuing for season 3. I hope they change their minds. For those who don't know, when Anne passed away, she was still with Ann Walker. But it took over 6 MNTHS to get her body back to shibdon. Back then they were just dabbling with embalming via the arteries. Ann walker wanted Anne lister well preserved, so she spared no expense to have Anne brought back to Halifax in good condition. Her funeral was so big it lined the streets. Thousands of people from all walks of life came to wish her farewell. She was loved and well liked by everyone. From what my dad has told me, even those who didn't like her did like her if than makes sense. She was respected. So sad how she passed away... but while alive, she sure did live!!

Please forgive me for my total ignorance, and it is truly something that has puzzled me for a very long time, Same sex marriages/partnerships,- how do couples get to understand who will be wife and who Husband?,( Ann lister seems obvious, very masculine for the time) I hope I don't offend by querying this.

She's forthright and clever just like Anne Lister, I think Helena and Anne would have been great friends if either one or the other would have been born in each other's centuries! Understand that during her rise that in the 1980's an associates mother graduated from MIT at the age of 19 and after much effort, the best job she could get was that of a "secretary". This was the 1980's. Not that long ago so figure out why women are still struggling to rise in the ranks.

In my opinion, Gentleman Jack is an insult to Anne Lister. It caricatures a woman who was so much more than a male clone. Thank you, Ms Whitbread, for your pioneering work on Anne Lister. She deserves more than a prurient TV series featuring women bonking, as a friend described it.

What an impressive life. And with some strong similarities with Anne Lister: Resilience in the face of adverse circumstances, a remarkable drive to follow her passions, a zeal to read and educate herself. She's really the fittest person to have published those diaries.

Are you sure that is Anne in the first portrait shown? That looks very much like a painting or drawing from the 1600's, not the 1800's. The neck ruff was most definitely a trend during the Elizabethan era, but I'm not sure it was in the Victorian era. Just curious. Are there any more portraits of Anne that survived time's destructive tendencies?

She teaches us it doesn’t matter where you come from or how old you are you can make something of yourself. What a confused individual She was, no surprises there then, elites act the same way today, using other people and their money etc, to get their own way, I love Stately homes...on behalf of the folk who built them with their skill levels,....not for the scum past and present who lived in them Last time I went to Shibden Hall was when I was 9 years old in 1970 on a coach from Ryburn high school, still live here and now i'll go back and admire the workmanship that went on there.

Fáscinating ! I just saw the Gentleman Jack series, which was marvelously done and afterwards I stumbled upon this wonderful video here on YT, which I enjoyed very much. THX for sharing. History is so enriching for our lives in many ways. Quite understandably during this current [ fabricated ] crisis the powers that be do nót like it when one actually knows a lot about several aspects of our history, because one is able to produce comparisons of inconvenient truths in relation to the criminal doings of the powers that be of today.
